Educational Objectives

We have Program Educational Objectives (PEOs) for our computer science, computer engineering, cybersecurity, and information technology undergraduate degree programs. PEOs are broad statements that describe the career and professional accomplishments that the program is preparing graduates to achieve. These objectives describe the expected accomplishments of our graduates during the several years following graduation.

Computer Science

Objective 1: Our graduates will apply their knowledge and skills to succeed in their careers and/or obtain advanced degrees.

Objective 2: Our graduates will behave ethically and responsibly, will remain informed through continuing education, and will be involved as full participants in their profession and society.

Objective 3: Our graduates will creatively solve problems, communicate effectively, adapt with agility and resilience, and successfully function in multi-disciplinary teams.

Objective 4: Our graduates will apply foundational principles, security, and best practices of computing grounded in mathematics and science to successfully complete software-related projects to meet customer business objectives and/or productively engage in research.

Computer Engineering

Objective 1: Our graduates will apply their knowledge and skills to succeed in their careers and/or obtain advanced degrees.

Objective 2: Our graduates will behave ethically and responsibly, will remain informed through continuing education, and will be involved as full participants in their profession and society.

Objective 3: Our graduates will creatively solve problems, communicate effectively, adapt with agility and resilience, and successfully function in multi-disciplinary teams.

Objective 4: Our graduates will apply principles and best practices of computing based on sound data grounded in mathematics and science to successfully.

complete hardware and/or software-related engineering projects to meet customer business objectives and/or productively engage in research.

CYBERSECURITY

Objective 1: Our graduates will apply their knowledge and skills to succeed in their careers and/or obtain an advanced degree.

Objective 4: Our graduates will apply principles, best practices, and current techniques of cybersecurity to protect critical infrastructure, data, processes, and people from adversaries and exposure.

Information Technology

Objective 1: Our graduates will apply their knowledge and skills to succeed in their careers and/or obtain an advanced degree.

Objective 4: Our graduates will apply principles and best practices of information technology to identify, implement, and enable effective technologies and apply fundamental computing knowledge to solve customer problems.

Our PEOs are reviewed annually at the Advisory Board meeting with input from our constituents. Periodic alumni surveys are also conducted. The BS in Computer Science and BS in Computer Engineering PEOs were revised in fall 2006, spring 2007, spring 2011, spring 2012, fall 2018, fall 2021,fall 2024, and fall 2025. The BS in Cybersecurity PEOs were defined in fall 2018 and revised in fall 2020, fall 2021, fall 2024, and fall 2025. The BS in Information Technology PEOs were defined in summer 2014 and revised in fall 2019, fall 2021, fall 2024, and fall 2025. No changes to the PEOs were recommended during the 2022 and 2023 Advisory Board meetings. In the 2024 meeting, multiple revisions were recommended. For PEO #2 across all programs, a statement on “continuing education” was added. For PEO #4 in the BS in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, and Information Technology programs, “practices” was changed to “best practices.” For PEO #4 in the BS in Computer Engineering program, the phrase “based on sound data” was added. For PEO #4 in the BS in Cybersecurity program, “process” was changed to “processes.” In the 2025 meeting, multiple revisions were recommended. For PEO #3 across all programs, a statement on “adapt with agility and resilience,” was added. For PEO #4 for computer science “foundational” and “security” were added. For PEO #4 for cybersecurity “computing infrastructure” was changed to “critical infrastructure”. For PEO #4 for information technology “information technology problems” was changed to “customer problems.” Alumni survey responses have affirmed the PEOs, and no changes have been precipitated by the alumni constituent group,
