Honors Faculty Rt. Hon. Henry McLeish
Public Service | Politics | Global Perspective
For more than 20 years, the Right Honourable Henry McLeish has shared his public service experience with high-achieving ÅÝܽÊÓÆµapps. For several years, he has taught a four-week course at the Honors College that engages ÅÝܽÊÓÆµapps in enriching seminar-style discussions about global human rights. By sharing his experience participating in politics and global affairs, ÅÝܽÊÓÆµapps gain unique insight into public service, the formation of laws, and how political changes affect communities.

Political impact
McLeish is the former First Minister of Scotland (the head of the Scottish government) and has filled a variety of roles during his public service career such as :
- Representing his home constituency of Fife as a Member of the UK Parliament and as a Member of the Scottish Parliament
- Serving in the Labour government of Prime Minister Tony Blair as Minister for Devolution and Home Affairs and in this capacity, was a leader in the creation of the Scottish Parliament in 1999
- Serving as Minister for Enterprise in the first Scottish Parliament before becoming First Minister
Since retiring from politics in 2003, Mr. McLeish has remained active in public affairs, chairing the Scottish government’s Commission on Prisons and producing a major commissioned report on the state of football in Scotland, among other high-level posts.
Academic and Public Service
In addition to his USF appointment, McLeish is an honorary ÅÝܽÊÓÆµapp at the ÅÝܽÊÓÆµapp of Edinburgh, a member of the King's Privy Council, and a regular contributor to public discussions in the UK through print, radio, television, and internet media. He also lectures frequently on British and European politics at universities and other institutions in the U.S., EU, and U.K.
